iWork Out: Modern Mom

You might not think you have time to hit the gym or don't feel like going out for a run and we assure you, you don't have to.Each week we will post our favorite YouTube fitness videos, perfect for doing them in the comfort of your own home.

This week it's- Modern Mom, a online magazine community that dishes "inspirational, original content written by mom, for moms". However, we aren't moms and you might not be either and that is OK.  

Case in point, EVERY ONE, wants to feel good about their body. So the fitness videos on Modern Mom are great for everyone, not just moms. Two Moderne favorites are below, one for trimming your hips and the other for arms and shoulders. There are many other videos to choose from as well food tips and more!

Get Bikini Ready With Your Hula Hoop

Burn baby burn... Get in shape with your hula hoop.


Time to "hoop it up" .. just in time to be bikini ready this summer.

Was recently introduced to the workout of hula hooping. Sure, I hula hooped as a girl but never really thought of it as a workout, because it was so fun.

Turns out hula hooping with a weighted hoop (can be purchased at a sporting goods store) can burn up to 200 calories in 20 min! Not only does this workout burn calories, it totally targets the mid section problem areas: abs, thighs and booty!

Too good to be true?!
Not sure yet, but we are working in our hula hoop workout regularly .. will keep you posted.

Next time you find yourself dragging to go to the gym, grab your hoop, turn on your fave show and start hooping!

New Year, New Diet. Have you tried it: Cabbage Soup Diet

It happens without fail every single year. Maybe it's the cold weather, maybe it is just being festive and partaking in the goodness of holiday meals and treats. Regardless of the cause, the effect is always the same - the Holiday 15 which leads to the New Year's resolution of "lose weight".

No secret that the way to a slim figure and a healthier life is eating well and exercising but let's be honest.. a quick fix or a jump start is always welcome. It's always motivating to see some changes....and what better way to jump start your dieting / healthy lifestyle than this great 7 day cleanse/ diet. You truly have to like veggies for this diet.... considering the fact that you will be eating veggies for 7 days straight.. but boy, is it worth it.


**As always this is a personal account / review and by no means are we qualified to make any claims on the effectiveness and nutritious value of the diet.**

The 7 Day CABBAGE SOUP DIET

To see the best results you have to stick to the plan with little or NO substitutions. The diet assigns select foods for each day of the plan. While you are restricted to the types of food you can eat- you are allowed as much soup as your heart desires. (From my experience, the desire fades by day 4.)

Tips:
*Drink as much water as possible.
*Spread out your non-soup options throughout the day. The soup is tasty but gets bland and boring by mid-week so savor the non-soup items.
*Do not drink coffee or consume caffeine and NO soda- even if it is diet.
*No alcohol - While it seems like a no brainer, you'd be surprised.
*Follow the diet strictly. It's only 7 days long ... so make sure you give it your all.

THE 7 DAY PLAN:

**I have substituted the beef for boneless/ skinless chicken, and lean white fish**
**I have also substituted the milk for soy milk or hemp milk**

Day One:
Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

Day Two:
Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.

Day Three:
Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.

Day Four:
Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

Day Five:
Beef And Tomatoes: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).

Day Six:
Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.

Day Seven:
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.


THE RECIPE:

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
Directions:

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.

Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.


The soup will definitely activate your digestive system - aka may cause upset stomach and gas.


Why does this diet work?
Most of the ingredients in this soup are NEGATIVE CALORIE foods. What does that mean? It means that your body burns more calories digesting the food than the calories that are being consumed. Therefore, you can stuff your face all day long with the soup and your body will be working extra hard to digest the foods- burning more calories.

What can you expect?
Obviously, results will vary between people but it has been my experience that the diet is fairly effective. Especially paired with some kind of workout regimen you will definitely see results.

The downside...
As soon as you start ingesting food and drinks, you will start to feel it. IF you are using this diet to prep for a party, special occasion - just be wary of what you eat/ drink after your final day. Remember, your body is being deprived / cleansed of certain nutrients/ chemicals so the second you take in certain foods/ drinks- you will feel ''bigger''.

Again, this is by no means a way to live your life. BUT it is a great way to lose a few extra LBS in a short period of time.

Moderne Loves: Bikram Yoga ( Irvine )

Ok, so seriously- the thought of doing yoga in a hot room for 90 minutes is probably a bit overwhelming. And yet, so many people swear by it.
Some of us at Moderne recently started Bikram Yoga and it has forever changed out life. Sounds dramatic but it truly echoes the opinion of so many others.
Not only does this workout burn a ton of calories - we are talking about 600-1000 calories in 90 min... This workout clears your mind, and soul.
Through 2 sets of 26 postures, your body/ mind falls into an active routine. Don't worry- the postures don't get boring- as your body reacts differently on every given session.
It's amazing how your mental and emotional state really impact your workout.
Let's breakdown the workout for you:
1st set of postures are done standing up.
You have your typical "yoga"-esque postures... balancing on one foot, lifting your leg up to your head, etc etc. All of these postures are done based on your own capabilities. No two people will be doing the exact same pose...and that is ok.
2nd set of postures is done on the floor.
Trust me, after the first set- laying on a hard wood floor sounds absolutely divine.
Through the whole work out you need to BREATHE.
Even if you feel light headed, or want to quit - just BREATHE.
Amazing how your breath can clear your mind and help you ''center'' yourself during the class.
So now where do you go to try this?
We have visited quite a few studios in Orange County, San Diego and Las Vegas... and let's just say the studio really does make half of the experience.
Sure, once you enter the room for class- it is you and that heated room. But let's face it- we all care about being in a clean, spacious, studio run by knowledgable staff.
In Our Opinion -
Not only is this studio HUGE, it is very clean, they offer you a towel per session, have great shower facilities and best of all - awesome staff and members.
At the end of the day - it's all about the WHOLE experience right?
**Side note** This studio is powered by solar energy- so you can feel good about being environmentally conscious while healing yourself.
Bikram Yoga Irvine- as well as other Bikram Yoga studios offer great introductory packages.. so that you can get your feet wet (no pun intended but you will be drenched).
Next time you are ''too busy'' to work out, or take time for yourself... set aside 90 min and get it all done with Bikram Yoga.

POP CHIPS! Moderne's Favorite Snack.

popchips are hands down-THE BEST-potato chips we’ve ever had! They’re delish AND healthy! The taste got our cravings going but the healthy part got us hooked!! Unlike other potato chips that are fried or baked, popchips are made from real potatoes and POPPED!! Think popcorn but with larger veggies! AND, for all you calorie counters out there, popchips is only 120 calories per serving!! Once we tried our first bag we were ADDICTED! We’ve got all 6 flavors:

Original, BBQ, cheddar, sour cream & onion, parmesan garlic, sea salt & vinegar, salt & pepper!

It’s no wonder that popchips is taking the entertainment and fashion world by storm! Actor, Ashton Kutcher, is seen constantly seen totting around his popchips stash. popchips even made its way to the Project Show (aka the world's largest fashion tradeshow!). The Sore Throat Cure All: Ginger Tea

While this post isn't fashion, style or beauty related... it's a miracle recipe that will sooth any sore throat.

Woke up this morning with a much lower voice and definitely a sore throat.
After sucking through a whole bag of cough drops, I decided to take some time to make the MIRACLE TEA.... this ginger honey tea will sooth any sore throat-- it's fail proof

Ingredients:
- Ginger Root
-Honey
- Hot Water

Tools:
- Grater

1. Take your ginger root and grate it with a grater. if you can't find a grater, just cut the ginger root into super tiny pieces... the smaller the better.

2. Put the grated ginger root into a mug.

3.Pour boiling hot water into the mug.

4. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes.

5. You can either leave the ginger root in your cup or scoop it out. Ginger root is completely edible, but it may be easier to drink with out the root first.

6. Add your desired amount of honey

7.Stir

8. Drink up and say bye to your sore throat!


This tea will clear your throat, coat your throat and definitely help you on the path to being sore throat free!
